How to Read a Trade Deficit

Why the trade balance must be separated into exports, imports, goods, services, prices and revisions.

Scenario

A trade deficit is the difference between exports and imports during a period. It is an accounting balance, not a standalone grade for an economy. The same deficit can arise from different combinations of domestic demand, foreign demand, prices, exchange rates, energy flows and capital-goods purchases.

Evidence: August 2026

Layer Published value
Goods and services balance −$105.6 billion
Goods balance −$136.6 billion
Services balance +$31.0 billion
Nominal exports $315.2 billion
Nominal imports $420.8 billion
Real goods balance, 2017 dollars −$114.7 billion

BEA and Census report the monthly totals on a balance-of-payments basis, seasonally adjusted but not price adjusted. The release separately provides real goods estimates and category detail.

Why it matters

ATLAS4 analysis: looking only at the deficit hides whether exports, imports or both changed. A wider nominal deficit can reflect higher quantities, higher prices or a changing product mix. The goods deficit and services surplus can also move differently. Country balances describe recorded flows, but bilateral numbers do not by themselves identify value added, ownership, exchange-rate effects or the economic benefit of a transaction.

Takeaway

Read trade data in layers. First record exports, imports and the balance. Then split goods from services, compare nominal with real goods measures, inspect major categories and note revisions. Use year-to-date and moving-average data to reduce dependence on one month. Keep the release vintage because preliminary months are revised.
