Scenario

Two August releases added detail to the U.S. demand and supply picture. The goods-and-services trade deficit widened because imports increased more than exports. Wholesale sales also rose faster than inventories, lowering the inventory-to-sales ratio from its year-earlier level. These are nominal, seasonally adjusted series and are not direct measures of real output.

Evidence

Measure August 2026 Change
Trade deficit $105.6 billion +$12.7 billion from July
Exports $315.2 billion +1.4%
Imports $420.8 billion +4.3%
Wholesale sales $817.5 billion +1.8% from July
Wholesale inventories $964.2 billion +0.5% from July
Inventory-to-sales ratio 1.18 1.28 in August 2025

Why it matters

ATLAS4 analysis: faster import growth can reflect domestic demand, prices, inventory decisions or category-specific flows. The trade report shows industrial supplies and capital goods contributing to August goods imports. In wholesale trade, sales growing faster than inventories reduced the ratio, but nominal growth can include price effects. The reports are related through supply chains, yet neither proves a single cause for the other.

Takeaway

Keep the layers separate: goods versus services, exports versus imports, nominal versus real measures, and sales versus inventories. Preserve July revisions—the trade release revised imports upward, while Census revised July wholesale sales growth to 1.0%. Category detail and later revisions should be checked before forming a durable interpretation.
